An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel that forms between the anal canal and the skin around the anus. It usually occurs due to an infection or abscess that does not heal properly, forming a pus-filled tract. 

Types of Anal Fistula 

  1. Intersphincteric Fistula – Located between the internal and external sphincter muscles. 
  2. Transsphincteric Fistula – Passes through both sphincter muscles. 
  3. Suprasphincteric Fistula – Starts above the sphincter and extends to the anal region. 
  4. Extrasphincteric Fistula – Extends from the rectum to the perianal skin, bypassing the sphincters.
