Nasyam – Ayurvedic Nasal Therapy for Detoxification and Clarity

What is Nasyam ?

What is Nasyam ?

Nasyam is one of the most important therapies in Panchakarma (Ayurvedic detoxification procedures). It involves administering medicated oils or herbal extracts through the nostrils. As the nose is considered the gateway to the brain, Nasyam helps in clearing nasal passages, detoxifying the head region, and enhancing mental clarity.

How Does Nasyam Work?

Nasyam focuses on eliminating toxins from the head and neck region. The nasal administration of medicated oils helps to:

  1. Clear sinus blockages and excess mucus
  2. Relieve headaches and migraines
  3. Improve mental clarity and cognitive function
  4. Treat ENT problems like sinusitis, rhinitis, and nasal congestion
  5. Balance Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas

Steps Involved:

  1. Preparation: The patient undergoes a gentle head and face massage with warm oil.
  2. Steam Therapy (Swedanam): To open up the channels and soften toxins.
  3. Administering Nasya: The patient lies down with the head tilted backward, and medicated oil or herbal decoction is instilled into each nostril.
  4. Gentle Massage: The nose and sinus area are massaged to facilitate absorption and drainage.
  5. Spitting Out Mucus: The patient expels the mucus and phlegm after a short while.
  6. Post-Therapy Care: Gargling with warm water or herbal decoction is recommended.
