Ela Kizhi (Pathrapinda Swedanam) – Rejuvenating Ayurvedic Therapy for Pain and Stiffness

What is Ela Kizhi ?

What is Ela Kizhi ?

Ela Kizhi, also known as Pathrapinda Swedanam, is a therapeutic Ayurvedic massage technique that uses medicated herbal leaves, tied in a cloth bundle (kizhi), and dipped in warm herbal oil. It is primarily used to relieve pain, reduce stiffness, and improve circulation, making it beneficial for musculoskeletal disorders.

 How Does Ela Kizhi Work?

The therapy involves patting or massaging the body with warm herbal pouches containing leaves of medicinal plants like Nirgundi, Eranda, and Shigru, which have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The warmth and medicinal properties penetrate deep into the muscles and joints, promoting detoxification and pain relief.

Steps Involved:

  1. Preparation: The leaves are chopped and sautéed with herbal powders and grated coconut in medicated oil.
  2. Filling the Pouch: The mixture is tied in a cotton cloth to form a bolus (kizhi).
  3. Warming the Kizhi: The pouches are heated in medicated oil before application.
  4. Therapeutic Application: The warm kizhi is applied over the affected areas using a tapping, pressing, and circular motion.
  5. Reheating: The kizhi is periodically reheated during the session to maintain warmth.
  6. Post-Therapy Care: A gentle full-body massage is given to enhance the absorption of the herbal oil.
