Shirodhara – Holistic Ayurvedic Therapy for Mental Well-being

What is Shirodhara ?

What is Shirodhara ?

Shirodhara is a classical Ayurvedic therapy that involves the continuous pouring of medicated oil, milk, buttermilk, or herbal decoction on the forehead (specifically on the "third eye" area). This gentle and rhythmic flow induces a profound state of relaxation, balances the doshas (especially Vata and Pitta), and relieves stress and mental fatigue.

Steps Involved:

  1. Preparation: The patient lies comfortably on a Shirodhara table with the head slightly tilted back.
  2. Medicated Liquid Preparation: The therapeutic liquid (oil, milk, or decoction) is warmed to a suitable temperature.
  3. Steady Pouring: The lukewarm liquid is gently poured from a special Shirodhara vessel in a continuous stream over the forehead.
  4. Therapeutic Flow: The oil flows in a gentle oscillation, moving side to side to cover the entire forehead.
  5. Duration: The process lasts for 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the individual's condition.
  6. Post-Therapy: A gentle head and neck massage follows to aid relaxation.
